there was a recruiting event at school and it made remember the day in high school, maybe a few days before graduation, that the army came to school to recruit. they didn’t just set up a table in the hallway with a poster and some guys in fatigues. my entire graduating class, 400 people, was called out to the bleachers facing the football field. we had no idea why we were going. there were a lot of prep rallies and things like that when i was in high school. i had a couple of cool teachers who would kind of let me do whatever i wanted, which often involved leaving and reading faulkner or something ridiculous in the field behind the school. but i had to go to some of them and was sort of bored and terrified at the same time. i didn’t really know where to stand, who to commiserate with, what to look at. it was earlier in the day when the army came to recruit so i wasn’t able to escape it. i shuffled onto the bleachers with my other classmates and listened while a red faced old guy with a round belly started talking about patriotism. it quickly occurred to me what was going on, and though i didn’t know what do to, i was aware that what was happening felt very wrong.
